KlimaFa's Climate Forest Demonstration Project will pioneer indigenous species climate forestry in Hungary's Bükk National Park. This demonstration project will result in the afforestation of 1000 hectares of unproductive agricultural land. It will begin in the spring of 2007 and is estimated to take 2 years to complete.
| Project Duration: KlimaFa’s Climate Forest Demonstration Project is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2007 and is expected to take two years to complete. However, carbon biomass sequestration will continue throughout the lifetime of the new forest.
| Project Purposes: 1. Restoration of Hungary’s native forests, renewal of local ecosystems, and revitalization of neighboring communities. 2. Certified reductions in atmospheric CO2, which drives global warming and climate change. 3. Accurate quantification of atmospheric CO2 sequestered in new forest biomass at any point in time and subsequent conversion to tradable carbon credit value.
| Project Summary: During the two-year course of KlimaFa’s Climate Forest Demonstration Project, KlimaFa will plant native mixed growth forests in a 1000-hectare area of Bükk National Park. This project will restore Hungary's native forests and generate climate benefits by sequestering 800,000 tonnes of atmospheric CO2 in forest carbon biomass. After planting, KlimaFa will conduct verification analyses to measure the resulting forest biomass and quantify the sequestered carbon. KlimaFa will also implement long-term monitoring programs to sustain certification and carbon credit value. The protocols for measuring long-term carbon storage are based on field-tested, peer-reviewed methodologies and the results will be reported to the government bodies responsible for certifying project success.
| Scientific Design and Assessment: KlimaFa will use the most advanced CO2FIX and CASFOR climate forest models, which allow project managers to enter tree parameters such as species, stem width, height, soil composition, and climate. These programs will then track the carbon flow into forest growth and organic soil enrichment in one-year increments. The models can also predict the quantity of carbon offsets that will be generated as a result of different planting strategies.
Once afforestation is complete, KlimaFa will establish a monitoring system that will ensure the quality and maintenance of the newly forested land. This system will also verify the volume of carbon sequestered and thus quantify the carbon offsets produced. All protocols are based on field-tested, peer-reviewed methodologies and all results will be reported to the government bodies responsible for certifying project success.
