Climate Forests
A climate forest is a strictly protected forest, planted specifically to sequester carbon and thus slow global climate change.
Climate forestry marries the science of forest restoration and maintenance with the financial resources of Kyoto Accord greenhouse gas emission reduction credit trading. Kyoto provisions recognize the importance of sequestering carbon in trees and other biomass as a means of reducing atmospheric CO2. Each tonne sequestered can be traded internationally as a "carbon credit" and thus generate revenue to sustain and extend these newly planted lands. In the Pannon Ecoregion of Central Europe each hectare of new forest may sequester up to 800 tonnes of carbon in its first 40~60 years. If these forests are well maintained and strictly protected, this biomass can be traded as carbon offsets or "certified emission reduction" (CER) credits.
| Climate Forest Projects
Klimafa will use its expertise in forest restoration, ecosystem modeling, and carbon credit markets, combined with financial and environmental assets supplied by partnering entities, to grow new climate forests.
In Hungary, where a far-sighted government has agreed to facilitate climate forestry, Klimafa has found an ideal partner to help initiate these benign and profitable projects and introduce the concept to the European neighborhood. Currently, there are thousands of hectares within Hungary's national park system immediately available for afforestation. The climate forests planted on these lands will be given a strictly protected status and will thus enjoy longevity.
Klimafa's work begins this year with feasibility studies and initial plantings in the Hungarian National Park system, starting with a projected 1000 hectares in the Bükk National Park.
